IMDb TV was one of the few sources of good news in 2020 when the ad-supported service announced that it had picked up an official Leverage revival series. IMDb TV officially ordered a revival season of Leverage in April of last year and we've been scouring the internet for clues about this little reunion ever since. Though COVID-19 shutdowns threw a little bit of a wrench into plans for this series, we can confirm that the season has been filmed and is on its way to Leverage fans. There are a few casting shake-ups, but most of the original crew is back and ready to steal some stuff.
Here's everything we know so far about the upcoming Leverage revival...
IMDb dropped the first look trailer for the new season during Amazon's NewFronts presentation on Monday, May 3. The gang is back together, with Noah Wyle as the team's fixer. What's the con worth this time? A whopping $20 million. Better buckle up folks!
It's coming this summer. IMDbTV will release eight episodes of Leverage: Redemption, the official name of the revival series, on July 9. Eight additional episodes will be released in the fall, upping the original season order by three episodes. Makes the wait worth it, huh?
The creators and most of the original cast will return. Creators John Rogers and Chris Downey will return to helm the series, and many of the original cast members have also signed on as series regulars. Beth Riesgraf will be back as Parker, Gina Bellman will reprise her role as Sophie Devereaux, and Christian Kane will also be back as Eliot Spencer. Don't worry Hardison fans, Aldis Hodge is also returning, but he is only listed as a recurring character due to other commitments.
Timothy Hutton will not return. Though Hutton starred as team leader Nathan Ford in the original series, he will not reprise that role in the revival. Presumably, his absence is due to the rape allegations leveled against him earlier this year.
Noah Wyle will star as the new lead of the series. Deadline reports Wyle will star as Harry Sullivan, a corporate lawyer who is looking for redemption after realizing he's been sitting on the wrong side of the table his entire career. Rogers responded to a fan question about what kind of character Wyle will be playing with a single word: "Conflicted."
We're getting a new team member. Due to Hodge's recurring status, the team will need another tech whiz on hand, and that role will be filled by Alyese Shannon, who plays Breanna Casey. According to Deadline, Alec will introduce this new team member who is a mix of sarcastic and intelligent. She's a genius mechanical engineer and hacker, who grew up in the foster system after her parents' tragic car accident. Breanna got lucky and landed a home with Nana, and her "bonus big-brother Hardison," who ended up teaching her computers and hacking.
The new series will have a different motivation. Dean Devlin told Deadline when the revival was first announced that the major change for this new series is that it's more of a redemption story than one of revenge. "While Leverage centered on a crusade to avenge the death of a child, this series is propelled forward as a redemption story of misdeeds that need amends," Devlin said. "I could not be more excited and fired up about returning to the world of Hitter, Hacker, Grifter, Thief!!"
Sophie is going to make us cry. At the first table read, Rogers tweeted that we are not ready for the performance Gina Bellman is about to deliver. "You're not ready for the heat @Ginabellman brings, people. She pulled off the 'I'm not sure this speech works I have to trust Gina' moment and made the room tear up. So good to be working with actors who started off great 12 years ago and have only gotten better."
The first table read has already happened. The stars and creators of Leverage reunited at the beginning of August for the first table read of the revival series and merrily posted photos together to get us all salivating. John Rogers announced the table read on Twitter, writing, "EP 1 table read today. Completely surreal, everybody's right back in the voices."
Leverage is currently streaming on IMDbTV, which is a free, ad-supported streaming service.
