After Paxinou has a stroke her teenage niece, Shimkus, faces the prospect of death for the first time in her life. Unable to cope, she leaves home and her job of caring for Paxinou and wanders aimlessly about the city. She comes under the influence of a variety of Parisian underground characters at a nightclub, but soon she grows bored with them and leaves. She runs into a poor Spaniard, Ibanez, killing a cat to eat, and is arrested with him, but Crauchet, the family doctor, wins her release. Trying to distract her, he drives her around the city and happens to collide with a van driven by Fresson and Hondo, two men she had met at the club. They all return to the club where Crauchet learns that Paxinou has died, and he leaves without telling the girl. Meanwhile, Fresson proposes to her, but she rejects him. Later she encounters Flotats, a jazzman she had also met, and while they make love she recalls her childhood with Paxinou. The next morning, fortified by her experiences, she is ready to face the fact of her aunt's death. leave a comment
