After Paxinou has a stroke her teenage niece, Shimkus, faces the prospect of death for the first time in her life. Unable to cope, she leaves home and her job of caring for Paxinou and wanders aimlessly about the city. She comes under the influence of a variety of Parisian underground characters at a nightclub, but soon she grows bored with them and leaves. She runs into a poor Spaniard, Ibanez, killing a cat to eat, and is arrested with him, but Crauchet, the family doctor, wins her release.
