In this lesser version of a popular play (and later opera) Colbert is cast in the title role as a featured cabaret girl. She meets Marshall, a married man, and the two enter into a torrid affair. This could have been a moving drama, but unfortunately the restrictions imposed by the Hays office drain the tempestuous life needed for the material to succeed. The cabaret numbers are also lackluster and don't help to flesh out the film. Lahr, a wonderful burlesque comedian, is never given a chance to show his stuff, and Colbert projects too much wholesomeness for the part. A disappointment from director Cukor, who clearly was capable of a better showing with such material. Previous versions include a 1909 Italian silent, a 1915 silent, and a 1923 Gloria Swanson vehicle. leave a comment
