This routine desert saga, produced by the team that would soon bring the James Bond series to the screen (coproducer Broccoli and director Young), is enlivened somewhat by the outstanding action scenes handled by associate directors Yakima Canutt and John Gilling. Mature stars as the title character, a bandit chief whose outlaw gang roams India's northwest frontier raping and pillaging. Wilding, a British major, is sent to capture the unruly bandits and succeeds. His victory over the outlaws is short-lived, however, when Mature manages to escape with the help of Illing, a sadistic nomad hell-bent on slaughtering the British. When Mature and Illing's men attack the British garrison there is much bloodshed, and Illing captures Wilding and tortures him. Mature, who, like Wilding, has developed a respect for his adversary during his pursuit and capture, is outraged by Illing's treatment of the Britisher and gives his life to save him. Gorgeous Technicolor and CinemaScope photography shows off the picturesque locations. leave a comment
