One of only a few films director Walsh made for British studios. Yarn centers around the efforts of a New York hood, Ford, to flee a murder rap by hightailing it to England, where he joins the army by posing as a Canadian. Once there he joins up with Mills, and the two fall for their sergeant-major's daughter, Lee. Ford is wildly distracted when old girl friend Bradley shows up from the States and threatens to blow his cover. To avoid embarrassment, the soldier mistakenly stows away on a ship heading for China; his regiment and heartthrob are also aboard. Once there, he proves his worth by saving the woman he loves from plundering Chinese bandits. Noteworthy are the impressive battle scenes in China and the humorous byplay from Ford's response to British army discipline. leave a comment
