After moving from Kentucky to New York City, trucker-novelist Franciscus finds his world changing with amazing speed. Pleshette is the editor who helps guide the naive young man, falling in love with him in the process. This causes her more than a little anguish--for with his newfound fame, Franciscus discovers he's wanted by other women. He gets involved with Page, a wealthy socialite, and the jealous Pleshette takes a job with a different publishing house. His first novel is greeted by only middling reviews, although it's picked up as a Broadway vehicle for Astor, an aging actress. Franciscus' next book (again with Pleshette as editor) is a big hit; but Page's husband, who finds out about the affair, sets out to ruin the writer. Franciscus' third book flops, his business ventures go under, and Page's son (who idolizes Franciscus) kills himself after finding out about his mother's affair. Franciscus heads off to a Kentucky cabin for some time alone to work on his next book, but he comes down with pneumonia. While recovering, he finally realizes that his future is with Pleshette. As a drama this isn't much, but with the soapy Hollywood treatment given here, it offers a minor field day for fans of lurid pulp. The movie rarely fails to entertain with its controlled, high-gloss direction. Franciscus is unexceptional as the title character, but Page turns in an excellent performance. leave a comment
