Seventeen-year-old Gregg runs away from a horrid home life and hitchhikes to Soho in London. With the help of Baddeley, a carnival fortune teller who takes a liking to the girl, she gets a job waiting on tables. Griffith, her employer, makes a pass at her, which she rebuffs. She turns her attentions to Conrad, a fledgling singer, and the two marry when she finds she's carrying his child. To finance a move to a new life in Canada, Conrad burglarizes Griffith's home. However, Griffith awakens and shoots Conrad. The latter is wounded and flees after killing the older man. Conrad steals a car and heads off with Gregg.
