Uninspired epic about the great Spanish novelist, dramatist, and poet, Cervantes, as a young man. Buchholz is the 16th-century hero who leaves his homeland, Spain, for Italy, where he becomes a soldier for the Pope and helps the Pope's emissary, Jourdan, in the church's war against the Moors in Spain. Gradually Buchholz wins prestige, while he falls in love with courtesan Lollobrigida. They are separated, however, when the Pope orders the banishment of all prostitutes.
