At 12 years old, Shirley Temple's career as moviedom's cutest ever child actress was just about over. In this last film on her 20th Century-Fox contract, she's an orphan (didn't that poor girl ever have movie parents?) adopted by Joe and Kit Ballantine (Jack Oakie and Charlotte Greenwood). They're a couple retiring from the song-and-dance life to a more sedate existence in a small town. No one in town really likes the new family, but, when a big storm hits, Joe becomes a hero, and the family gives a fantastic show that ends all bitter feelings. Temple, as usual, carries the film. There is a use of clips from Temple's earlier films to show her character's past, making this a sort of full-circle picture for the young actress. Fans--and anyone under the age of 10--will enjoy it thoroughly. leave a comment
