All The Young Men: Review

A Marine platoon of 45 men is ordered to hold a mountain pass near Wosan early in the Korean War, when Chinese Communists were swarming all over MacArthur's tiny army. Quinlivan is mortally wounded and hands over his command to Poitier, a novice sergeant, which angers most of the men since Ladd is the most experienced soldier in the platoon. Although he has lost his stripes, Ladd is the man expected to lead. Poitier tries to enlist Ladd's help but he is rebuffed; Ladd feels that he is a "black man with an axe to grind." Dissension and uncertainty permeate the defenders until a massive attack is made on their position and a faltering Poitier gives way to Ladd's authority. The Marines, under Ladd's command, stop the attack with only a few survivors. Ladd is terribly wounded when a Chinese tank, which he blows up, runs over his leg; the leg requires amputation. Battle has, however, unified the men. Ladd and Poitier become close friends, so much so that when Ladd later requires a transfusion, he accepts the blood of Poitier with gratitude. This was a journeyman film for Ladd and a thankless role for Poitier, who is the real star; yet this simple story of men fighting and dying together against impossible odds is compelling and has powerful moments. leave a comment
