Ford plays an overworked, underpaid legal researcher who--determined to make a success of his life--moves to the West Coast with wife Roman and their children. Studying for the California bar examination, Ford meets fellow student Foch, who is enormously attracted to him. He also runs into French chanteuse Darcel, who appears tempted to give up a prospective career in pictures on his behalf. Other troubles arrive in the form of a string of telephone calls from people seeking to place bets on horse races; Ford's phone number had previously been assigned to a bookmaker. When Roman jokingly accepts a winning bet, Ford is threatened by hoodlums attempting to collect the payoff. Ultimately, Ford, bookie Leonard, and the hoodlums are all arrested on charges of illegal gambling. Ford's successful defense of his own case kicks off his new California career nicely. Ford's first try at light domestic comedy demonstrates that he has the touch. This was director Leisen's first film for MGM. leave a comment
