A mildly entertaining, though wholly inaccurate, account of the infamous John Dillinger's early days opens when the soon-to-be famous outlaw (played by Adams), along with his girl, Mobley, decide to rob her father's safe. The pair are caught by Mobley's father (Knight), and Adams takes
the rap. He goes to prison and there links up with Pretty Boy Floyd (Conrad), Baby Face Nelson (Ashley), and Homer Van Meter (Terranova). After escaping from prison, Adams manages to get his friends out as well. Along with their respective molls and Buono, Adams and his thugs become the most
wanted men in America. Adams goes through plastic surgery to change his looks, then kills the doctor (Hoyt) after he tries to rape Mobley. Eventually Mobley gets fed up with Adams and this hard life. Pregnant, she demands marriage, but Adams refuses. The FBI later closes in on Adams' hideout after
Mobley reveals its whereabouts. She is hit by a bullet and tells Adams to flee for his life. He is the only member of the gang who manages to escape.
Though Dillinger did link up with the other infamous criminals portrayed in this film at one time in his career, their outlaw partnership bore no resemblence to the events of this film. Adams predicted this low-budget feature would make a fortune at the box office, but the movie-going public
quickly cut this boast down to size. As exploitation features go, this isn't bad, and the ending is fairly effective. No one seemed to notice though that despite the 1930s setting, the actors are often seen in 1965 era garb, the year this film was made. leave a comment
