In 1907 pre-revolutionary Russia, a young musician sets out to document the folk songs of his country. During this journey he comes across many different people, both amusing and frightening. His tour is constantly overshadowed by the threat of Czarist troops roaming the countryside, looking for anyone who might pose a threat to the already precarious monarchy.
