Concluding their regular weekly radio show, the cast of "Kay Kyser's Kollege of Musical Knowledge" head for Bellacrest Manor to perform at the 21st birthday party of pretty Janis Bellacrest (Helen Parrish). Arriving during a rainstorm, the radio performers are stranded when the drawbridge is destroyed by lightning. The eerie mansion contains strange artifacts collected by its deceased owner, as well as Janis' silly aunt (Alma Kruger) and her guest, Prince Saliano (Bela Lugosi), a sinister medium. Also at the manor are retired judge Mainwaring (Boris Karloff) and the newly arrived Professor Fenninger (Peter Lorre), a purported expert at debunking spiritualism, who has been recruited by Mainwaring to expose Saliano. Eventually, it becomes apparent that someone is trying to keep Janis from reaching age 21 (when she will inherit the estate), but Kyser and crew come to the rescue. This happy-go-lucky mix of genres could hardly go wrong in its combination of the menacing talents of Karloff, Lorre, and Lugosi and the enjoyable presence of Kyser and his popular radio ensemble. It was Lorre's first exposure as a horror star (Karloff and Lugosi were already fixtures in the genre). Ginny Simms and Harry Babbitt sing pleasantly, and Kabibble is outstanding in the comic number "The Bad Humor." "I'd Know You Anywhere," by Jimmy McHugh and Johnny Mercer was nominated for an Oscar and their other songs for the film included "You've Got Me This Way," "Like the Fella Once Said," "I've Got a One-Track Mind," "Don't Think It Ain't Been Charming." leave a comment
