Browbeaten Brown, the butt of many jokes in his business office, invents an unsinkable swim suit. Testing his lifesaving livery, he meets heiress Rogers, who mistakes him for a swimming champion. Through a series of wild mishaps, Brown--hydrophobic to the core, he doesn't even like to drink water--becomes a contestant in a marathon swimming race. Still sillier incidents--an accidental tow by a speedboat, for instance--conspire to bring his race to a successful conclusion despite the conniving of his rivals, Williams and Foster. The first of the cavern-mouthed comedian's pictures to feature the word "mouth" in the title, this was his second film with Rogers (who, said a reviewer, was "made for a bathing suit"). In a role for which Gloria Shea had originally been signed, Rogers played well against Brown's slapstick style. Director Bacon thought well enough of her to give her a show-stopping, scene-stealing part in his next picture, 42ND STREET (1933). leave a comment
