You Can't Buy Everything: Review
Robson stars as a woman driven to a psychotic state after being jilted by Stone. Though years have passed, Robson still holds a grudge against Stone, even to the point where she withdraws her money from a bank when her former love becomes an officer there. Her head is sent spinning when her son, Bakewell, falls in love with Stone's daughter, Parker, but by the finale Robson has had a change of heart. YOU CAN'T BUY EVERYTHING was originally scheduled for Marie Dressler, but her death left a vacancy which needed filling. Robson, who had just hit it big in Frank Capra's LADY FOR A DAY, was chosen for the part, based on the real-life Henrietta Howland, known as Hetty Green, who amassed a fortune on Wall Street around the turn of the century through both investment and manipulation. She reputedly became the richest woman in America, known as the "Witch of Wall Street." Stories of her miserliness abound, some of them noted in this film, such as her practice of waiting on a train for one of the passengers to fall asleep so she could steal his newspaper, and the time she sent her son to a charity clinic when he was injured.
