Five Turkish convicts are given a week's leave from prison to visit their loved ones in this extraordinarily painful drama. What has promised to be an emotionally uplifting period of freedom takes a disastrous and tragic turn for each of the prisoners, one of whom comes home to find that his brother has been murdered by police, while another learns of his wife's infidelity. A visually intense examination of Turkish mores and customs (the scene of the prisoner dragging his unfaithful wife into a snowy wasteland is both powerful and alienating for Western audiences), YOL was written by actor-turned-director Yilmaz Guney while he was behind bars and directed, under Guney's supervision, by one of his former assistants. Guney escaped from prison in 1981 and died three years later, after completing his final picture, THE WALL. YOL shared the top prize at Cannes with Costa-Gavras's MISSING. leave a comment
