Although the title is drawn from Allen's retrospective commentary of the period between 1918 and 1933, this has nothing to do with that scholarly work. It was a brilliant debut for Sullavan and she transcended the material. There are laughs and there are laughs. Larry walking into the sushi place to loud greetings of "Chicken Teriyaki Boy"? That's a laugh. But Larry's father watching porn so loud it could be heard throughout the whole front hall of the nursing home? That's a laugh. I mean, I'm giggling as I type this. His sweet, old dad with those giant glasses, saying "What? I can't hear it." Truly a classic moment, and one that can be shown only on pay-cable.
