This ridiculous attempt to update the romantic comedy formulas of the 1930s and 1940s features Pavarotti, the famed opera tenor, in his film debut. Before an outdoor concert in Boston, tenor Giorgio Fini (Pavarotti) inexplicably loses his voice and goes to a beautiful throat specialist, Pamela Taylor (Kathryn Harrold). Only someone in a coma couldn't figure out what happens next. YES, GIORGIO suffers from a terminal case of the cutes. Reviving the simplistic formula of an earlier era simply doesn't cut it with audiences that have grown to expect more realism in romance. Franklin J. Schaffner, who seems a long way from his success with THE PLANET OF THE APES and PATTON, keeps his direction simple and anonymous, which was probably the best thing to do with this material. The opera sequences, as expected, are lavish and entertaining. The song "If We Were in Love" was nominated by the Academy for an Oscar. leave a comment
