This depressing picture concerns a widowed grocery store owner who operates the business for years after her husband's suicide. Her brother-in-law is romantically interested in her and after some time she gives in to his advances. With little warning she jilts him, preferring to live with her husband's memory. Depressed, the man commits suicide. As with many of Naruse's pictures, the penalty for hope and yearning for something better is bitter disappointment. leave a comment
