A splendid family film, set just after the Civil War in the wilds of southern Florida. The Baxters — Ma (Jane Wyman), Pa (Gregory Peck) and their one surviving child, Jody (Claude Jarman) — are having a tough time eking out a living on their small farm. When Pa is bitten by a rattlesnake and Ma must kill a deer and make a life-saving elixir out of its innards, Jody begs his parents to allow him to raise the the doe's orphaned fawn as a pet.
