The First Year: Review

Gaynor and Farrell, major box-office draws at the time, are newlyweds who move to a small country town. Gaynor becomes dissatisfied by the easygoing ways of her husband, and begins to fall for an old boy friend. Farrell has bought some property and sets up a sale to the railroad. He invites the buyers to a dinner, which turns into a disaster, sending Gaynor scurrying back to her parents. After patching things up with the railroad men and completing the sale, Farrell goes to his wife and saves their marriage. Similar to UP POPS THE DEVIL (1931) in its treatment of the subject matter, THE FIRST YEAR would later influence director George Stevens' ALICE ADAMS (1935), which lifts this film's marvelous dining room scene. leave a comment
