In the midst of a string of historical pictures made for Italian television, Rossellini directed this biography of political leader De Gasperi for the cinema. Vannucchi coldly portrays the leader who in the postwar years headed the Christian Democratic Party. Dialogue is held to a bare
minimum, Rossellini relying on historical documents rather than invention. Gregory Peck was rumored to have been considered for the lead, which at the very least would have made the picture more appealing to American viewers.
