This revealing film from Rainer Werner Fassbinder concerns Elvira Weishaupt (Volker Spengler), formerly a man, who has had a sex-change operation in order to please a man she loves. Lonely and desirous of love, Elvira is jilted by a live-in male lover, fails to communicate with her wife and daughter, and has no success in winning over the man that she changed for, Anton (Gottfried John).
