Takakura, a former killer for the Japanese Yakuza, takes up the anonymous life of a fisherman after leaving the violent underworld. He soon becomes a well-loved member of the community, none of whom, not even his new bride Ishida, knows of his criminal past. When Takakura gets into a bar fight, his coat is sliced open, and the intricate tattoo of the Japanese goddess Yasha etched on his back is revealed to all. This design is a well-known trademark of Yakuza members, and the villagers now fear the man they once accepted. Yuko Tanaka, the wife of a junkie, is a barmaid with whom Takakura has grown friendly, and it turns out her husband's drugs are supplied by a branch of Takakura's old gang. Having fallen in love with Tanaka, Takakura is forced once more to confront his former colleagues, leading to the film's violent conclusion. YASHA's strengths lie in the intelligent, heartfelt performances by its cast, but unfortunately their efforts are undermined by a lack of coherence. Furuhata's direction is uneven, never melding the two sections of the story together with any real success. leave a comment
