Caine, an architect, is married to Taylor, a brash, obnoxious woman. At a party he is introduced to York and is immediately taken by this widowed mother of two. York is the proprietor of a boutique and has a personality that is the polar opposite of Taylor's. She and Caine soon become involved, which sets Taylor off on a jealous rampage. Taylor's outrageous attempts to come between her husband and his lover include drunken scenes, a suicide attempt, and a plot to exploit a lesbian attraction York had exhibited while a student. Decked out in gaudy eye makeup, outrageous costumes, and excessive jewelry, Taylor chews up scenery left and right in a volcanic performance. She goes beyond her role in WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? making vulgarity and drunken rages an art form all their own. Given free rein by the director, Taylor is clearly having fun with the part. The story alone isn't much, but, inflated by the Taylor hurricane, the movie works as an incredible portrait of a marriage on the rocks. For a brief nude scene Taylor used a body double, though the figure shown is decidedly slimmer than the actress' form. leave a comment
