Did the X-Files Jump the Shark with the Movie Franchise?

X-Files: I Want to Believe

If you're a sci-fi fan, chances are you saw the first X-Files feature movie, since The X-Files: Fight the Future was released at the height of the TV show's success. But did anyone see the second? Could lackluster box office and mixed reviews for The X-Files: I Want to Believe be an obstacle to future movie adaptations?

Chris Carter: X-Files 2 Is a Stand-alone Film

X-Files courtesy 20th Century Fox

Apparently, the truth is still out there. Which would explain why The X-Files will be back out there July 25, when the second movie version of the series hits theaters. Plot details are more closely guarded than an alien autopsy, but creator Chris Carter does have a few clues to offer those eager X-Files fans who have been waiting for more since the Fox show ended in 2002. "This is really a continuation of the series, imagining how the characters' lives have evolved," explains Carter, who cowrote and is directing the movie. "It's a stand-alone story that owes everything to the series, but not the mythology of the series. What we'll be dealing with is government-based as far as the conspiracy goes, but expect this not to be a revisitation [of the show's convoluted conspiracy]."FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) will still be at the center of the story, and Studio 60's Amanda Peet and rapper Xzibit have been added to the cast as fellow agents. X-Files 2 Update, Meryl as Julia Child, More Movie News

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson courtesy 20th Century Fox

The second X-Files movie is really, truly happening. 20th Century Fox has even blocked off July 25, 2008, as the flick's release date. Natch, plot deets are being kept hush-hush, but the pic is said to be a stand-alone thriller (Yay! No mythology!) that will further Mulder and Scully's relationship. I've got goosebumps already.... In other movie news, Meryl Streep has signed on to play Julia Child in Julie and Julia, a Nora Ephron comedy in which a disgruntled temp (Amy Adams) spends a year trying to whip up every recipe in the master's cookbook.... Teeth, the indie buzz-builder about a high school student with a toothed vagina, has had its release moved to February 2008. — Ben Katner read more

X-Cellent: Scully and Mulder Finally Reunited!

X-Files: The Movie courtesy 20th Century Fox

The truth isn't out there, it's right here: X-Files leading man David Duchovny recently hooked up with Gillian Anderson and their former series' creator, Chris Carter, to discuss a second movie follow-up, SCI FI Wire reports. (Go ahead and plotz. I'll wait.) "It was more emotional than I would have thought it was [going to be]," he said of the confab. "If you spend that much time with people and go through that much, there's a lot of residual feeling." X-2 is tentatively scheduled to shoot in December, with Carter directing from a script that he penned with X-phile Frank Spotnitz. "I want us to go out and do what the show always did best, which is really smart, scary, ultimately ambiguous stuff," Duchovny said. "There's been a lot of shows and movies that kind of tread the same area, or tried to, and I think we always did it best. And I hope we can go out and do it best again."Wednesday's Today's News was written by Ben Katner. read more

"Small Worlds"

A very enjoyable episode indeed. It was interesting to see the gang battling a foe they really couldn't do anything to stop — and for that foe to be of this world, rather than alien or technological. It sort of reminded me of some of the better X-Files "creature" stories, though "Small Worlds" had the added element of filling in some of the Captain Jack backstory. In an eerie take on a bird-watching expedition, Estelle, an elderly woman with a thing for fairies, catches a few on film in the woods. Jack (after an unsettled, shirtless night spent at HQ) drags Gwen to see Estelle present her images. It seems that the two old friends have an ongoing debate as to whether fairies are good or evil, Estelle preferring to believe that they are kind and harmless (boy was she proven wrong), Jack recognizing them for old, restless earth spirits. When Gwen sees a faded photo of what looks like Jack, he explains that it was actually his father, and that his father and Estelle were inseparable... read more

Boo! Supernatural Scares and the Night Stalker Stalks Again!

Before we get started, lemme just say that I got a new tattoo last night and it’s quite fetching. Red circle with a star in the center on the inside left forearm. Even the artist dug it. My buddy Jake got an anchor on his bicep…little jealous, not gonna lie. Hurt like a mofo, though. Kids, don’t try this at home.OK, now that we got that out of the way, it’s time for a little more sharing: I love the scary. Horror movies. Haunted houses. Hell, I yelped like a girl at those Burger King commercials with the wooden-faced whatever-that-is. And to anyone who was sitting near me during Rob Zombie’s Halloween remake, I apologize. Welbutrin make me all better now.Honestly, I have willingly chosen to have the bejebus freaked out of me for like, the last 7 years, spending almost every night in October watching some scream gem or another (ask me about The Boogens, please!). So, in honor of my inner scaredy-cat and the glorious approach of my personal High Holy Day of Ha... read more

I know it's a little late, ...

Elizabeth Mitchell, Lost

Question: I know it's a little late, but I'd like to address the Emmy nominations. I think that Elizabeth Mitchell definitely was robbed of a Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series nod for Lost. Her work has been top-notch, and Juliet emerged as my favorite character this Lost season. Cheers for Michael Emerson and Terry O'Quinn on their nominations. They — especially Emerson as the enigmatic and chilling Ben — deserve it. But the person who perhaps deserves an Emmy nomination most of all, and who never gets noticed, is John Terry. Terry is such a fantastic (and underrated) actor, he actually makes you feel empathetic for Jack's father when you know you should be rooting for Jack. Lost definitely should've been nominated as a series, because the writing, directing and acting were excellent this past season (let's just forget about the prehiatus episodes and "Stranger in a Strange Land"). Once again, though, the Emmy nominations were utterly predictable. On another Lost topic, many ... read more
