Breezy and inoffensive, this Disney comedy gives the old fish-out-of-water story a science-fiction twist: Its alienated young hero appeals to literal aliens — cosmic creatures — to rescue him from the Earthlings who don't appreciate him. A spinner of fables about extra-terrestrials, teenager Mike Pillsbury (Michael Shulman) is sick of being a nerd. Hoping to spruce up the decor of an upcoming dance, popular Katelyn (Erika Christensen) surprises shy Mike by asking for his technical expertise. But her jock boyfriend, Scott (Marcus Turner), resents the brainy competition and sabotages Mike's mechanical decorations. Thoroughly humiliated, Mike throws himself into working on a satellite device he hopes will allow him to contact the sort of interplanetary beings he writes about — they must be out there! Although Mike's best pal, Nick (Adam Wylie), assures him that however much he might like it to be so, Mike is not the abandoned offspring of space travelers, Mike persists in his attempts to communicate with things from other worlds. And lo and behold, Mike is soon visited by Barnabas (Voice of Malcolm McDowell), a genial talking dog. Barnabas has opened up a portal to other galaxies, but warns that Mike can't easily rescind his request to be rescued from Earth. In short order, a galactic lawyer and a cosmic show biz agent accost Mike with a variety of moneymaking schemes. Additionally, Mike has made it possible for an evil Thoad (Brian Steele) to sneak in and kidnap his little brother Jay (Andrew Ducote). With the assistance of Katelyn, Nick and the reluctant Scott, Mike must travel through the universe to a land where human beings become zoo specimens. Can Mike and his mates can outwit the super-intelligent Thoads and rescue Jay? Naturally, this family film offers a sincere message about trying to fit into the hostile environment of high school. But it also offers a satirical and sometimes humorous picture of pesky aliens with the souls of William Morris agents. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
