Originally made as a two-part made-for-TV miniseries, this "what if" film, which pandered to '80s anxiety about the "Evil Empire," was later cut together into an integrated, slightly shortened version. U.S. President Thomas McKenna (Rock Hudson) and Soviet General Secretary Gorny (Brian Keith) try to head off a nuclear holocaust after a renegade Soviet military group sabotages the Alaska pipeline in retaliation for an American grain embargo. But the conflict escalates rapidly and it begins to look as though the two superpowers are doomed to go to war regardless of the inevitable consequences. Shot at Francis Ford Coppola's Zoetrope Studios and completed by David Greene after veteran director Boris Sagal was killed in a helicopter accident at the start of production, the film benefits greatly from Robert Joseph's intelligent screenplay. leave a comment
