Essentially a love story about a writer trying to choose among success, his best friend, and a lover with a mysterious past, THE LAST WORD also takes a few digs at Hollywood. Unfortunately, the script here cannot match the ambitious aims of the premise. Martin (Timothy Hutton), a Detroit columnist with a new book, goes to a party with his mob-connected buddy Doc (Joe Pantoliano).
