This one is played for slapstick, but Colbert and Stewart make it a bright and often hilarious screwball comedy under Van Dyke's smooth direction. Truex is an irresponsible millionaire, and Stewart is a neophyte private eye hired to keep an eye on him. Tycoon Truex gets involved in a murder, and the bumbling Stewart is also framed for the same crime. He is sent to prison with Truex but escapes the train taking them there and resolves to dig up the evidence that will exonerate himself and his client. He stops Colbert, a lady poet, and more or less holds her captive until he can piece the clues together. The couple get involved in a series of wild adventures in which Stewart must impersonate an actor, a chauffeur, and a Boy Scout leader. He replaces Sutton as the leader of a group of Boy Scouts, donning the short-pants uniform and wearing glasses so thick they look like telescopes and render Stewart almost blind. Some of the exchanges between Colbert and Stewart as they fumble about in the woods are side-splitting. It all works out well, with Colbert falling in love with her gentle kidnapper and saving him repeatedly until he can pinpoint the culprit. Colbert and Stewart interplay beautifully in this Ben Hecht comedy, but it is too reminiscent of IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT, the kind of screwball comedy the public once loved but, by the time of this film's release, was growing a bit predictable. The supporting cast is outstanding, loaded with comic veterans Sutton, Pendleton, Kennedy, Truex, Clyde, and Conried. leave a comment
