How I Won The War

1967, Movie, NR, 109 mins

The film might be a little too funny for its own good. Richard Lester (A Hard Day's Night) intended this black comedy as a stinging condemnation of war, but the laughs blunt the impact of his message. Lester mixes moments of hilarious satire with bloody depictions of the reality of combat as a middle-aged British WWII veteran (Michael Crawford) offers rosy reminiscences of what was in actuality a disastrous career. Look for top-billed John Lennon in a relatively small part. Read the complete review for How I Won The War
