A disappointing third installment in the Flagg and Quirt series (WHAT PRICE GLORY? and THE COCKEYED WORLD were the first two), WOMEN OF ALL NATIONS remains fascinating nonetheless, since it marked Lugosi's first appearance since DRACULA and an early nonperformance from Bogart, whose bit part was cut out by a studio desperate to salvage what they considered to be a dog. Several years after WW I, rollicking rivals McLaglen and Lowe find themselves back in their beloved Brooklyn. McLaglen now works as a Marine recruiting officer and Lowe, who has had enough of the military, runs a Turkish bathhouse for women. When Lowe's establishment is raided by the police, McLaglen offers to help Lowe escape--but only if he re-enlists. Desperate, Lowe rejoins the Marines and soon finds himself on another crazy adventure. Hooking up with their Marine buddy Brendel, Lowe and McLaglen make their way to Sweden, where they all fall in love with cafe singer Nissen. The three Marines pull their usual mischief on one another while vying for the affections of the sexy Nissen, but they find themselves outclassed when Nissen's huge boy friend arrives on the scene and tosses them out. The crazed, lovesick Swedish giant then proceeds to tear apart the place as the three Marines quickly head for the next port. After a brief stop in Nicaragua (where the Marines are sent to help the locals recover from an earthquake) the boys find themselves in Turkey, where they once again run into Swedish songbird Nissen. Anxious to resume their romantic rivalry, the Marines are dismayed to discover that Nissen is now among the many wives of prince Lugosi's vast harem. Taking a chance while Lugosi is away, the Marines sneak into the harem and entertain the wives with tall tales of their military escapades. Unfortunately, Lugosi returns and catches the men making advances on his wives. The outraged Lugosi orders the Marines castrated, but before the deed can be done, McLaglen, Lowe, and Brendel ship out for their next port. A lackluster effort for all involved, WOMEN OF ALL NATIONS does deliver a few solid laughs, but the series was running out of gas. Director Walsh himself remarked in his autobiography that the film was "...a turkey because it could not be anything else." Elaborating his point, the director continued, "A third McLaglen-Lowe film was too much for the public; I had been afraid of this from the start. It should have been called `The League of Nations,' because it flopped just as hard." Walsh was right; the film garnered bad reviews and little box office. McLaglen, Lowe, and Brendel do just fine in roles that were becoming so familiar they could have performed in their sleep, and Lugosi is effective in his brief role as the crazed prince, though it must have been a disappointment to fans awaiting another DRACULA. Considering the fate of this film, perhaps Bogart was lucky that his face was left on the cutting room floor. leave a comment
