An ironic story about a doctor who becomes a marked man to both the Nazis occupying France and the French Resistance because of his humanistic attitudes. As a doctor and small-town mayor, Blier saves the life of an Englishman, for which he is arrested by the Nazis. But the commanding
officer, Frantz, also a humane individual, falls in love with Saint-Simon. Encouraged by the doctor, the two elope. Frantz flees from the army, and Blier is condemned to death by the Resistance fighters who don't condone marriages between French women and German soldiers. A Nazi firing squad
finally kills him. An effective look at how war can stifle values normally deemed commendable.
