It is hard to believe that a film directed by Ray and written by Mankiewicz could be anything less than brilliant. But RKO lost a whopping $760,000 on this convoluted mess. In flashback, O'Hara tells how she shot her young protege, the hellcat Grahame, whom she had groomed for fame as a singer when her own voice began to give out. Crisscrossing flashbacks follow, telling how Grahame rebelled against O'Hara's attempts to make her a lady as well as a thrush. And then the whole flimsy structure topples when Grahame, coming briefly out of a coma, reveals who actually shot her, and it was not O'Hara. Why O'Hara confessed in the first place is never explained, further compounding the mystery of why this story by Vicki Baum was handled in such a preposterous way. leave a comment
