For once Costa-Gavras left politics alone to concentrate on personal relations and proved that he is unaware of how people normally behave toward one another. His characters, as in Z or STATE OF SIEGE, are usually people forced into extreme conditions by political oppression and thus isolated from others as they try to cope with physical or emotional intrusions. Seldom are these characters (usually portrayed by Yves Montand) allowed to show any real emotions toward living people. It comes as no surprise how strained WOMANLIGHT appears as Montand and Schneider attempt to strike up a relationship after both have recently suffered extreme losses, he his wife, she her daughter. The oppressive camera angles that added a sense of power to the earlier works are not appropriate here, nor indeed is the overall approach. leave a comment
