Classes and cultures clash as three suitors of disparate backgrounds pursue well-to-do beauty Schneider. Orsini, a dissolute aristocrat of diminished means, has married Schneider for her wealth but loves her after his cynical fashion. Noiret is all establishment, a successful capitalist, upright, uptight, and desperate for the damsel. Lanoux is a Greek Communist evading the secret police of dictator Johannes Metaxas (the time is 1936). The rich, jaded Schneider finds fleeting romance with idealistic rebel Lanoux, and a daughter is born of their brief union. Lanoux is killed, and Schneider disappears during WW II. Years later the daughter--now a woman--makes a pilgrimage to Greece to reprise her parents' chronicle. Orsini and Noiret meet again and discuss the events of the past. Essentially a love story within a political setting, the film is stunningly photographed. Author La Rochelle committed suicide during WW II, apparently as a result of his fling with fascism. leave a comment
