This same picture had been made twice before, once as a silent in 1924, and again in a dreadful early talkie in 1929 starring Betty Compson and George Barraud. A few of the angles are twisted about here. It is a WW II setting instead of a WW I. Montgomery is married and Canadian instead of single and English, and the script is tightened to make for a smoother and more believable effort. Montgomery accepts a dangerous mission behind enemy lines to escape a bitchy wife. In Paris, he has an affair with dancer Howard and leaves her pregnant before he continues with his mission.
