Huston is the commander of the French cruiser Lafayette which is attacked by German submarines and sunk. The few survivors are rescued and Huston undergoes a formal hearing to determine whether his negligence was responsible for the loss of the ship. Unbeknownst to Huston, his much younger wife, Dagover, was aboard the cruiser at the time of the tragedy; dallying with handsome young lieutenant William, she was trapped in the latter's cabin when the ship put to sea.
