This suspenseful film with the inimitable Lupino opens with a bang as she drives a car at breakneck speed and crashes through a guardrail, falling into the river below. From there the film moves back in time to show Lupino, the daughter of a rich mill owner in a small southern town, marrying McNally, scion of the clan that gave the town its name but which has lately fallen on hard times. He wants the mill to restore his family fortunes, and in short order he has murdered Lupino's father and is going after her. McNally tampers with the brakes on Lupino's car, causing the crash. She is not killed in the accident, but when McNally comes along to check on his handiwork, she pretends to be dead. Soon, though, McNally discovers that he has been duped and sets out in pursuit of his bride. She narrowly escapes his clutches a number of times before being rescued by Duff, an ex-soldier just returned home. Lupino is very good here, conveying the terror of a woman threatened by the man she thought loved her, and the other roles are similarly well done. Especially good is Duff, who was working with Lupino for the first time. They would later marry and work together many more times. leave a comment
