This suspenseful film with the inimitable Lupino opens with a bang as she drives a car at breakneck speed and crashes through a guardrail, falling into the river below. From there the film moves back in time to show Lupino, the daughter of a rich mill owner in a small southern town,
marrying McNally, scion of the clan that gave the town its name but which has lately fallen on hard times. He wants the mill to restore his family fortunes, and in short order he has murdered Lupino's father and is going after her. McNally tampers with the brakes on Lupino's car, causing the
crash. She is not killed in the accident, but when McNally comes along to check on his handiwork...
