This film adaptation of a lesser Dashiell Hammett story centers around the efforts of Bellamy to lead a straight and quiet life after serving a three-year stretch in prison. His biggest problems are his hot temper and his quickness to turn to his fists when his anger is aroused. This is what put him behind bars in the first place, when he accidentally killed a man in a fight over a girl, and it forces him to go on the run. Wray is the girl who walks into his life trying to escape the clutches of the no-good Douglas, who is not willing to give up his pretty dependent and comes searching for her.
