Barbara Stanwyck is a grieving widow who arrives at her husband's family home and surprises the other members of the clan, who had no idea that the deceased was married. Stanwyck admits that it was a marriage in name only, done so that the dead man would be able to inherit a large fortune that was being held by his uncle, Flynn. A divorce was to follow in short order and Miss Stanwyck would get a fee for marrying the would-be legatee. Flynn is suspicious of Stanwyck and she returns the raised eyebrows. Flynn maintains a secret lab in a section of the huge house that is off-limits to everyone. She begins her own reconnoitering and finds out why that section is cloistered. Her husband, Basehart, is not dead at all. He's quite alive and quite nuts and wanders around the estate. (Isn't this beginning to sound a bit like THE CONDEMNED OF ALTONA, but without the Nazi angle?) Basehart attempts to kill Flynn and dies accidentally. Now Stanwyck knows the secret: there's an insanity streak as wide as the Mississippi running through the family. Flynn has been trying to keep it mum because Cowan is running for office and it wouldn't do for the world to know that the senator had some bats in the family's belfry. And that's it, the mystery is revealed and everyone can go home. Geraldine Brooks is introduced in this film as a hysterical niece who commits suicide and acts a touch overblown for the film. Most of the other thesps are wooden, especially the totally miscast Flynn. leave a comment
