Bakshi, the man who put genitalia on anthropomorphic cartoon characters in FRITZ THE CAT (1972), the first X-rated cartoon feature, turns to fairies in this futuristic PG-rated parable of good and evil. In an effective mix of animation, stock footage, and rear projection, Bakshi's postnuclear millenium vision is revealed to be without shades of gray. In a world of mutants, a fairy queen is magically impregnated and gives birth to twins, one good, the other bad. The good twin eschews all technology (the very thing that brought the world to this sorry state); the bad one espouses it. The latter digs up an ancient movie projector and some newsreels that reveal to him the way in which Adolf Hitler's panzers overran Europe. Using these as a model, he launches an attack against his good brother, who has only magic with which to defend himself. After heavy losses, the good brother--with other survivors, an elf and a sexy princess--captures the bad brother's general, Necron 99, converts him, and renames him Peace. The four run into a bunch of fairies, whose help they solicit. After a few more reverses, good wins over evil. Visually striking but flawed by poor scripting. leave a comment
