A bizzare adventure melodrama which is a loose remake of a 1928 film entitled INTERFERENCE. Landi stars as a young woman who is kidnaped by bandits while traveling in China. One of the hoodlums is Taylor, an independent pilot who has hired himself out to the bandits for a quick buck. Taylor dumps his current girl friend, Drake, and falls in love with Landi, protecting her from the lascivious attentions of her captors. Eventually Landi marries him. Years later she manages to escape her strange adventure when Taylor is killed in a plane crash. Back in London, the widowed Landi marries a brilliant heart specialist, Cavanagh, and settles down to a life of gentility. This is not to be, however, because none other than Drake and the very much alive Taylor show up at her doorstep. Faced with a possible bigamy case by a supposely deceased husband still very much in love with her, Landi is beside herself with anguish. Drake, angry because Taylor still loves his wife, attempts to blackmail Landi. Trying to help, Taylor poisons Drake, but Landi winds up the prime suspect. Nobly, Taylor confesses to the crime and exits from Landi's life. There is not much special about WITHOUT REGRET except a sense of heightened melodrama which carries the film from one highly unlikely event to another. The film works on that level if the viewer doesn't take things too seriously. WITHOUT REGRET also marks young David Niven's first important role in his third film appearance. leave a comment
