When a guilty coworker plants stolen goods in her locker, innocent store clerk Hussey is accused of the crime and sent to prison, even though Neal, the son of store owner Hinds, knows of her innocence. The embittered Hussey spends her three years in prison studying law, finding unethical ways of making money through legal loopholes without risking conviction. Released after three years, the vengeful Hussey puts her studies to work for her while simultaneously vamping Neal. She finds, at the picture's conclusion, that even near-crime doesn't pay. This is the fourth version of Veiller's 1912 Broadway hit. Two silents appeared in 1917 and 1923 and a sound version, PAID, starred Joan Crawford. This was Czech director Machaty's first feature film in the US (he was well known as the director of 1933's ECSTASY which first brought Hedy Lamarr--in her entirety--to the attention of Hollywood). The screenplay is updated with modern touches. The department store owned by Hinds sells private airplanes; Neal thus becomes a dashing pilot, demonstrating an aircraft to the unrecognized Hussey after her release. leave a comment
