Wishmaster 3: Beyond The Gates Of Hell: Review

Less an exercise in supernatural hokum than a college slasher flick with some extra trimmings, this second WISHMASTER sequel unleashes the nasty Djinn on Illinois academics. Though Diane Collins (A.J. Cook) survived a childhood car crash that killed her parents, her psyche was permanently damaged by the trauma. Her boyfriend, Greg Janson (Tobias Mehler), often caters to her neuroses, as do her Baxter College classmates Katie York (Louisette Geiss) and Billy Matthews (Aaron Smolinski) sometimes cater to sensitive Diana's neuroses. Diana works as a teaching assistant to Professor Mr. Barash (Jason Connery), and puts in long hours at a museum showcasing ancient Persian art. There she inadvertently unlocks a granite artifact and touches the stone of fire within, unleashing a Djinn. As Diana returns to her dorm, the Djinn makes quick work of the morally bankrupt Barash's soul and assumes his identity. Embodied as Barash, the Djinn must collect 200 souls and trick Diana into making three wishes; once the third wish is made, the Djinn will be able to vanquish mankind. Making allowances for her history of instability, Diana's pals pay lip service to her tall tale while the Barash Djinn torches an administrative secretary, tricks one coed into a literal broken heart and dupes another into undergoing deadly liposuction. Unable to outsmart the wish-phobic Diana, Barash targets her best friends, but the Archangel Michael leaves a stained glass window to enter Greg's body. Meanwhile, Diana has learned that she could foil the Djinn by dying before making a third wish, and as demonic Barash and angelic Greg battle for her soul, she considers suicidal self-sacrifice. You can't keep a bad genie bottled up or the nubile bodies from falling, and director Chris Angel can't make any of it interesting. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
