A sweet family drama tinged with fantasy, set in the terminally suburban '50s, THREE WISHES features Patrick Swayze as a hunky drifter with the cutest little scruffy dog in the world, the preternaturally clever Betty Jane. Young widow Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio nearly hits the pup with her car, and winds up running down Swayze instead. Feeling guilty about his broken leg, she invites him to stay in her spare room until it mends, despite the disapproving stares of the neighbors. Swayze and Betty Jane befriend Mastrantonio's three sons and bring some sorely missed excitement into her life, not the least of which involves nude sunbathing. Poised perilously between childish fantasy and adult nostalgia, THREE WISHES pulls off the balancing act better than one has any right to expect. And who would want to argue with the notion that love can bring magic into the world? leave a comment
