Based on Bob Woodward's book about John Belushi, WIRED is the movie Hollywood supposedly didn't want the world to see. These fears proved needless, since WIRED did a nosedive at the box office, despite its provocative tale of drug abuse among the rich and famous. WIRED begins after Belushi's death, then brings the comic (Michael Chiklis) back to life to be escorted through key scenes in his past by Angel (Ray Sharkey), a Puerto Rican cab driver. Besides some tender moments between Belushi and his wife (Lucinda Jenney) or Dan Aykroyd (Gary Groomes), the mood is strictly sour: Belushi's "Saturday Night Live" days are tension-ridden, a live performance by Belushi and Aykroyd as the Blues Brothers includes audience members pelting Belushi with packets of cocaine, and so on. Throughout, director Larry Peerce cuts to scenes of Woodward (J.T. Walsh) researching his book, or flashes forward to Cathy Smith (Patti D'Arbanville) and that last, fateful night at Hollywood's Chateau Marmont hotel, where Belushi died in her company from a drug overdose. WIRED succumbs to the pitfalls of most antidrug dramas, the chief difficulty being that there can be no real conflict where the dramatic arc is a downward spiral. But the film is commendable for neither preaching and nor excusing, for its depiction of the pressures of show business, which have an ugly-accurate, insider's feel, and for its excellent performances. leave a comment
